The environment and its conservation – more commonly know under the reference “sustainability“ - is also of great concern for the pipeliner team .

Our society has a number of significant challenges ahead and one of them is the question how to better conserve and utilize our resources. This requires considerable work for raising the awareness, and most importantly, undertaking active steps. We ask our customers to principally work with pipeliner in the cloud. There are a number of reasons for it: on the one hand, there is increased productivity with lower costs and on the other, our customers can make at the same time a considerable contribution to the protection and conservation of our environment. According to a latest study, commissioned by Microsoft from the consulting firm Accenture, energy consumption and CO2 emissions from cloud applications a reduced by a third compared to normal server applications.

Why?
1. The same application can be used by a number of users at the same time. Less energy is required for the storage of programs.
2. Small companies can, according to the study, reduce their CO2 emissions by up to 90%, medium sized companies by 30% - 60%, and large corporations up to 30%.

If you are questioning that cloud applications are also being supplied by huge data centers, you are correct. Microsoft connected already two years ago servers to the net which are placed in containers located in Dublin and Chicago. These servers are placed in many small containers which are linked to existing data centers, which can be easily expanded this way. The benefit comes from the huge energy savings. A single container can hold up to 2.500 server units and requires only three cables for network connection, electricity and cooling, otherwise it is totally independent from external infrastructure. The containers can be used in a flexible manner and switched on and off at any time. This saves energy and conserves the environment.
